According to NBC Miami, Dan Woolley of Colorado Springs was caught in the collapse of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince Haiti. Dan claims that he was able to use the applications on the phone to treat injuries to his head and foot, and prevent going into shock. He also was able to use his Iphone’s camera to map his surroudings. Dan is now thankfully recovering in Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
This also brings up a good point. Superphones, and their ability to help in emergency situations. From the sound of it without the medical app on Dan’s phone he would have bled to death. With the new capabilities built into the Droid and the Iphone, they could be useful to locate survivors trapped under rubble, and help with folks who are assisting injured people. I would love to see even things built to attach to the Mini USB Ports on the phones that could use the phone as a heart monitor or other devices. I think in the near future you can plan on seeing this technology expand.

From a business standpoint, just look at what this could do for healthcare. It would be much easier for doctors to carry around these light little tablets than all that paper (Paperless hospitals?). Not to mention being able to use applictions for monitoring patients on the tablet while patient records are at your fingertips. While the healthcare industry is not the most “Easy Adopters” I’m pretty sure that Apple is ready to meet the challenge head on.
Another industry that could benefit is Gaming and entertainment. Think about this. If the rumors about the tablets 3g connection are true, gaming just got a whole other platform to work with, as well as streaming movies to the tablet.
I cant wait to see this when it comes out, and look forward to finally being able to read all those e-books on it.
