Android

Droid Hacked

I love my Droid, its an amazing piece of technology. Of course you knew I was going to have to get root access, and now I will tell you how. Remember, I am not responsible if you screw up your droid. If you brick your phone send me a message and I may be able to help you fix your phone. Remember, TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

You will need the following:
The Droid Root Image – http://www.4shared.com/file/168496608/8fa27888/droid-root.html
The Droid SDK – http://developer.android.com/sdk/download.html?v=android-sdk_r04-windows.zip
The Droid SU File – http://www.magicandroidapps.com/su.zip
The Droid USB Driver – http://www.smilepak.com/temp/Droid_USB_Driver.zip

Ok, so once you have everything downloaded, the fun begins.

Step 1. Install the Droid SDK on your computer. Install the file directly to your C: drive. This is pretty painless and should download everything you need to gain root access to the phone via your command prompt.

Step 2. Plug your Droid into your computer via the USB cable that came with the droid.

Step 3. When you plugged in your droid, your phone prompted you to mount the SD card. Go ahead and click Mount.

Step 4. Right click on My Computer, and click properties. In the window that popped up click device manager.

Step 5. In the device manager you should see your droid (motorola A855) with an exclamation point next to it. Right click on it and click update driver. When prompted for the driver point it to where you downloaded the droid driver.

Step 6. Next, go to where you downloaded the droid root image and change the name from droid-root.zip to update.zip. Next copy the update.zip file to your SD Card. To do this, click My Computer and in the window that pops up you should see the droid listed there. The file that opens when you click on the droid is your SD Card.

Step 7. Turn your phone off. Once the Droid has powered down, hold down the “X” key on the keypad while pressing and holding the Power on button. When the device boots you will be in what is called “recovery mode”. You will see a graphic with an exclamation point on it.

Step 8. Press the Volume up, and the camera button. After you do this you will see a list come up, using the D-pad on the slide out keyboard, select Update.zip. This will upload the new droid image with root access.

Step 9. When the device reboots you will know you were successful by looking in your application menu (Bottom slider). If you look in there and see a little “android ninja” that says superuser permissions, you have successfully gained root access to your droid.

Step 10. Open up your command prompt on your computer by clicking Start > Run > Type “CMD” into the run command and the command prompt should open up. Next Type in “cd android-sdk-windows/tools” you should see the file change. Next type in “adb shell” and you will see the prompt change to a “$”.

Congrats you now have root access to your droid, have fun and happy hacking!

Google postpones Nexus One launch in China

In light of recent issues, Google has postponed the launch of their Nexus One phone in China. The Nexus One was scheduled to be launched in China this Wednesday. This comes after the issues with Chinese hackers breaking into Gmail accounts of high profile targets. Google is considering closing operations in China, and “taking their toys and going home.” I personally am glad they are, that will mean they are no longer helping China censor the internet there.

In response to this, China uni-com has announced they will be delaying all android based telephone scheduled to be released there.

Droid Does!

Ok, so among my friends, its no secret that I love my droid. Yet certain people still haven’t gotten a clue (Dan), lol. I mean come on, Open development, Replaceable Battery, and no AT&T. That should be enough. But no, google had to take it beyond that. Pretty much, if it can be done on the iphone, rest assured the droid can do it.

The only issues I have with the droid, they have pretty much taken care of. The back of the phone used to come off, however, the last time I went to a Verizon store they gave me a new one. I did complain about the battery life, but found out that even though the Verizon people tell you the blackberry charger will work with it, it wont. After charging it fully with the Droid charger, it works great. In an effort to extend the battery life, I disabled the Wi-Fi and turned it so that the GPS isn’t running all the time. The speed of the thing is great and the security tools are very cool.

One thing that ticked me off was that like 2 weeks after getting my droid, they bring out the Nexus one. Come on guys, you tell us like crazy that droid does, and its all that and a bag of potato chips and then put out the next one without even waiting a few weeks. Now honestly, its not that big of a deal because everything the Nexus One has, dare I say, Droid does. Its mainly a style change. Lets face it, Nexus one looks cool.

Well for now, I’m pretty happy with my Droid.
