A chance meeting in a Galaxy far far away…

So Friday was my birthday, coincidentally, it was also the day that Cars 2 was out in theaters so we took the nerdlings to see it on Saturday. Upon arrival at the movies, we were welcomed by….Bobba Fett? I was like, uh, hey wait a minute this is pretty cool. After purchasing our tickets we walked back only to find several awesome looking stormtroopers, A WORKING R2-D2 Unit (Geek-gasm) and Darth Vader himself (ironic because my wife got me the Darth Vader Lightsaber collectable only hours prior).

The Empire commandeered the movies to raise money for several charities (and no this isn’t just a psi-op to cover up that whole Alderaan thing). The 501st Legion site ( http://www.501st.com ) says:

“The Legion is an all-volunteer organization formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts under a collective identity within which to operate. The Legion seeks to promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes, and to facilitate the use of these costumes for Star Wars-related events as well as contributions to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work…”

Awesome! These guys have found a way to not only do something they love, but also use it to raise money for good causes! Not only do they work to help raise funds, but they also work as evangelists for those of us who still love star wars (not just the movies, BTW). Great job you guys, your skill in AWESOME has increased by +20.
So, maybe these Empire guys arent Alll bad….. LOL.

Netflix to stream to WII

It has been confirmed by Netflix that they will now be streaming their videos to the Nintendo Wii. Wii owners who have a broadband connection and a Netflix subscription that costs at least $9 a month will be able to watch those programs with no extra charge. Nintendo and Netflix, wouldn’t give an exact launch date for the service but expect the product to be ready soon. Thats pretty sweet, except that the Wii isn’t HD therefore, the streams won’t be. The PS3 is already streaming Video with Netflix, and yes it is HD. Xbox360 players can also use the streaming service, but they must be Xbox “Gold” customers.

You can see where this is going, the Roku Netflix player is pretty awesome.

Goodbye Movie Stores!

I think the days of the movie store like Family Video, Movie Stop, and Blockbuster (R.I.P), have seen their final days. Even purchasing films are going to become a thing of the past, Imagine the Roku player with a 1TB Hard drive in it. No more having to worry about scratched up DVD’s or Blueray’s. If you can just store the video inside the movie library and not have to fiddle around finding the disk and putting it in the player, thats pretty cool.

In reality, I don’t thing Netflix Streaming to the Wii, will mean all that much. But I think that this is just another step down the path.
