What is Google Buzz?

Google announced today a new service to add to their service offering. It’s called Google Buzz. Google Buzz is a part of gmail. Basically, friends who you have emailed from your gmail account are automatically added. You can share status updates, just like you do with twitter. This tool will also message out when you upload new content to Picasa, or YouTube. This is basically another micro-blogging site just like twitter, only by default your tweets are private, not openly shared with the rest of the world. I do not believe this to be a Twitter killer. I think twitter has a tight grip on that part of social media, and they aren’t going anywhere. It’s difficult, even for Google, to knock something like Twitter off the map. When a site becomes a part of everyday speech, and people love it, its not going anywhere, unless you have a MAJOR improvement on it.

This is being touted to be Google’s first shot into the Social Media arena. Google is hands down the leader of the pack when it comes to search engines. Man: Honey, how far is San Diego from Tampa? Woman: I don’t know, Google it. Be honest, you know you’ve said it. Google is the best search engines (Aka Marketing Company) on the planet. However, I’m not sure that many die hard twitter users are going to move, but we shall see. Personally, I like to use as many outlets as I can, so I will enjoy using it. Im sure that they will get lots of people using it, but its not going to kill twitter.

I do think that Google Wave is probably 200% more powerful than just Gmail with a twitter like status update. I don’t understand why Google doesn’t just open that bad boy up some more and get more people using it as opposed to Google Buzz. In my opinion they should dedicate more resources to google wave.

12% of Super Bowl Viewers use Social Media Sites during the game

Social Media and the Super Bowl

In a study done by Nielsen, 12% of those watching last years super bowl also hung out on the web during the game. The average time people spent online: 24 minutes. Its pretty amazing that the sites most people were visiting were not NFL related. In fact only 18% of the people spending time online during the super bowl were on related sports sites. Most people spent time on social networks, with Facebook being the most used site during the Super Bowl.

You can really see the culture shift happening when it comes to Social media, especially with the super bowl. From how people advertise, to pre-game talk, to just good old fashioned smack talking, Social media has changed the landscape. Earlier last week, I told you about how instead of doing a super bowl ad, pepsi is using the funds to enhance their presence on social media. Its ovbious things are moving more and more to this way of communicating. I just cant wait for the rest of the world and business community at large to wise up. Just the other day, an “Internet Expert” was telling me how Social Media was a fad and that no one should use it to further their business. I’m sorry Mr. Internet Expert, you should probably call the good folks at Pepsi and tell them about how their wasting their marketing dollars, and that Social Media wont help them at all. I’m very sure they would love to hear your expert opinion. Give me a break, I dont think a huge company like Pepsi goes into ventures blindly, in fact I know they don’t. Its great to see a company like Pepsi doing more with social marketing, and I cant wait to see what is to come with their campaigns.

Pepsi skips Superbowl Ad’s for social media

Pepsi and Social Media

Pepsi has decided not to advertise this year at the superbowl, so they can dedicate more resources to Social Media. Then again who wouldn’t, Social Media is an entire shift in the way we communicate. Soon, we will stop searching for products and they will find us via social media. A superbowl ad will cost you between $2.5 million and $3 million, and get seen by 93.2 million people (last year’s Super Bowl). Where as a social media campaign will cost you less, and get seen by many more. Twitter alone has 18 million users, throw in myspace, facebook, linked in and the numbers skyrocket. Facebook has over 200 Million users. The numbers are incredible. Not only that but you can target the exact audience most likely to buy. I think this was a good move on Pepsi’s part.
