The Ipad, and why some people are disappointed

The Ipad

The Ipad...Looks like it sucks

Ok, Ok, so maybe the picture is a little much, but there are alot of folks who are not thrilled by the ipad. Why?

No Multitasking

The Ipad is running iphone OS 3.2 which means, one thing at a time. The lack of ability to multitask is a big deal breaker for some. I think that knowing apple, they will fix this soon, probably before it even ships.

No USB Port

Yes, thats right no USB port. You guess it, the freaking Ipod connector. This sucks because it means if you want to use it with anything else, you must buy stuff specifically for it. Also known as more expensive crap that’s not in your collection of 50 million USB devices.

No SD Card

Ok, so I understand the no USB port thing, everyone likes more money. But no SD card. Now this is where I draw the line. One would assume that at least with an SD card you can take all your EBooks and put them on the SD card and put it on the Ipad but no, not with the Ipad. This also means forget extra storage if you have more than 16, 32, or 64GB worth of books…your screwed.

No Flash

So imagine your surfing and pull up that cool new flash game or video or something, and it simply doesn’t play. Well thats because Apple hates the lack of control with the adobe flash package. Its bad enough on the Iphone, but now the Ipad too.

No HDMI

Wanna hook the Ipad to the T.V., too bad. There is no support for HDMI. Of course Apple has been reluctant to add HDMI support to ANY of their products so this should be no surprise, but when they hint that this is the perfect toy for your living room, it would be kinda nice to be able to hook it up to your T.V. right?

No Open SDK

Yes my fellow developers, you must sign an NDA before receiving the SDK. Not really a shocker here, they do this with everything they have. This means developers cannot talk about the platform without making sure the other developers they are working with have also signed an NDA.

No Camera

In the Social Media age, you didn’t put a camera on it? WTF? This means no video conferencing, no skype video, no facebook/ myspace/ picassa images. NONE. This device is totally for watching social media, but not participating in.

Now to be fair, there was no way that the Ipad could have lived up the INSANE amount of hype about it, but damn did they even try?

Haiti Earthquake Survivor claims he used Iphone to survive

According to NBC Miami, Dan Woolley of Colorado Springs was caught in the collapse of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince Haiti. Dan claims that he was able to use the applications on the phone to treat injuries to his head and foot, and prevent going into shock. He also was able to use his Iphone’s camera to map his surroudings. Dan is now thankfully recovering in Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

This also brings up a good point. Superphones, and their ability to help in emergency situations. From the sound of it without the medical app on Dan’s phone he would have bled to death. With the new capabilities built into the Droid and the Iphone, they could be useful to locate survivors trapped under rubble, and help with folks who are assisting injured people. I would love to see even things built to attach to the Mini USB Ports on the phones that could use the phone as a heart monitor or other devices. I think in the near future you can plan on seeing this technology expand.

Our Thoughts and Prayers are with all the Victims, Families and Hero’s working to assist them. If you would like to donate to help those in need go to http://www.redcross.org/

Droid Does!

Ok, so among my friends, its no secret that I love my droid. Yet certain people still haven’t gotten a clue (Dan), lol. I mean come on, Open development, Replaceable Battery, and no AT&T. That should be enough. But no, google had to take it beyond that. Pretty much, if it can be done on the iphone, rest assured the droid can do it.

The only issues I have with the droid, they have pretty much taken care of. The back of the phone used to come off, however, the last time I went to a Verizon store they gave me a new one. I did complain about the battery life, but found out that even though the Verizon people tell you the blackberry charger will work with it, it wont. After charging it fully with the Droid charger, it works great. In an effort to extend the battery life, I disabled the Wi-Fi and turned it so that the GPS isn’t running all the time. The speed of the thing is great and the security tools are very cool.

One thing that ticked me off was that like 2 weeks after getting my droid, they bring out the Nexus one. Come on guys, you tell us like crazy that droid does, and its all that and a bag of potato chips and then put out the next one without even waiting a few weeks. Now honestly, its not that big of a deal because everything the Nexus One has, dare I say, Droid does. Its mainly a style change. Lets face it, Nexus one looks cool.

Well for now, I’m pretty happy with my Droid.
